〈解説〉
賛美歌・ゴスペルの名曲。バグパイプでも演奏される。
ジョン・ニュートン(John Newton/1725-1807)は、イギリスの貿易商の家庭に生まれ、母親は幼いジョンに聖書を読んで聞かせるなど、熱心なクリスチャンであった。成長したジョンは、商船の指揮官であった父に付いて船乗りとなる。歌詞には〈ある体験〉を通して神の恵みに目覚めたジョン・ニュートンの敬虔な心境がつづられている。

その〈ある体験〉とは、アフリカからの三角貿易からイギリスへ帰る船の中での奇跡的な出来事だったと言われている。
